Welcom to Saro Srivutha's Blog

Who is Saro Srivutha?

I used to be well known as Saro Sivutha, a founding president of The Student Movement for Democracy (Cambodia 1998-2001)

Saro
is my last name, which is my father first name. His last name is Tuot that is the
first name of my grand father, whose last name is Praj, which is my great grand father's name. Actually, prior to colony time, real Khmers as well as other people of Southest Asia did not have last name exclude those who migrated from China. Saro means sweet liquid.

Sivutha is my first name (it's not really first since all my relatives call me Vuth). My father named me after one of the three King Ang Duong's sons (Norodom, Sisovat, and Sivutha). I think that Sisovat and Sivutha have been pronounced in Siamese way. Si- here is believed to stem from Sri or Siri (Khmer/pali) that means "happiness and good fortune". So I prefer to call my name in Khmer way that is Srivutha (means something you wear that brings you happiness and good fortune).

I was borned in Nimith (
(a small town near Cambodian-Thai border), Ochrov district, Battambang province, Cambodia, on about six months before Khmer Rough took over (17 April 1975). My parents were Khmer krom from Svay Tong districk, Mouth Chrouk province, Southern Vietnam. They settled in Nimith about 15 years before I was borned.
